about the aftermath, the rawness and vulnerability of a blank slate

The move to Montreal has been full of relationships coming from the most chance encounters. This series is dedicated to all the wonderful people in my life, new and old. Without you, I'm not sure where I'd be.

This summer has been about being present. Traveling, seeing loved ones, making new friends... Montana has made this series of works on paper about capturing those small moments without thinking about the future.

When making the Fresh Air Series, Montana felt like she was finally feeling lighter after a long winter. She is continuing to explore bringing in transparency alongside her opaque shapes.

I need to make art to breathe. 2022 has been a darker year for me. There have been times I’ve felt like my life was spiraling, or I felt very low. A lot can change in 100 days. When I look at these pieces, I see the days I needed color. I see the softer worlds I wanted to climb into. I see the hope that making gives me. I see the growth I was discovering. I see the exploration. Not enough time has passed for me to truly understand how this year has changed me. I feel different. I know I’m different, but the clarity isn’t here yet. Until then, I have plenty of pieces to help me untangle exactly what happened in 2022.

Spring in Montreal has Montana painting in greens... the new grass, the flowers... she made it through her first Canadian winter. It was long, but everything tastes sweeter now.

For her first Canadian winter, Montana kept warm by dedicating herself to her paintings. Through an isolating lockdown and having COVID, her art practice carried her through to the first signs of spring.

After moving to Montreal in September of 2021, Montana felt refreshed restarting her art practice in a new place. She only brought her brushes and a few art tools with an intention to start with less. Leaving behind all the unfinished paintings gave her a clear head to begin a new body of work.

In 2021, Montana completed her 100 Day Sketchbook project where she developed a daily art practice. Making art every day, even if just for a few minutes, taught her that showing up makes all the difference. Out of that 100 Sketchbook Day Project came these seven 8x8" mini abstract paintings, and it felt fitting to name them after the days of the week.

Montana began this series in December 2020. Each of these pieces in her tree series began as abstract paintings and slowly evolved into trees with mixed media techniques. She used collage, acrylic ink, spray paint, and acrylic paint pens on top of many layers of acrylic paint. The trees' sillouettes come from photos she took of trees in Wilder Ranch State Park in Santa Cruz, CA.
