August 2022
This summer has been about being present. Traveling, seeing loved ones, making new friends... Montana has made this series of works on paper about capturing those small moments without thinking about the future.

Naturally, the colors I am most drawn to are teal and magenta, but what sets Summer Night apart is its pops of orange. The orange acrylic ink underneath the layers of thicker paint brightens and warms the piece, without it, it wouldn't be as electric.

Heading Out has a smoothness to its shapes. Your eye follows the lines and waves through it like butter. Without harsh edges, it feels soft and bright.

Electric jumps off the page. As my breakthrough piece after my creative slump in June, Electric inspires me to keep going. There is always something new I haven't made yet.

Seaside leans into its simplicity with its layers primarily being made with acrylic ink. The transparent pink magenta being layered over the teal makes it cooler, and the thicker orange lines are more straight than the linework in other pieces.

Walk in circles draws your eye along in its round strokes. The dark teal and mustard palette is unique in my work, and for this piece it gives it a summery tone.

There With You has a stability it the motion within it because the linework primarily stays horizontal. It has a wide range of magenta shades with its pops of my favorite peach to contrast.

I love my red oxide acrylic ink. In Ready Yet you can see the thin layer I started with with the white paper showing through the lines of the strke underneath the larger shapes.

Turn Here's white acrylic ink highlights on top of the baby blue bring those shapes forward and send the darker teal shapes back.

Ever Since, the third in the trio with Turn Here & Ready Yet, has this butterfly wing shape to it. Even with larger shapes, it still feels like there is motion.

On My Mind blends vertical marks together. There are crayon marks driven through wet paint to create linear texture within the large shapes.

Roller Rink has a stand out palette. A faint neon green acrylic ink background contrasts and compliments the main dark purple marks in the scene.

How it Feels is a calmer piece. Its light peach blending into thin pink gives it an atmospheric look.

Pop has been hanging around my studio for a long time. I didn't know what she needed to be considered finished. It turned out that covering the cream with some lavender finally resolved the composition for me.

Step Back was a darker painting I made in June when life was darker despite the long summer days. This piece is heavily textured with many different paintings underneath that I never felt satisfied enough to call finished. The layers underneath are part of what gives Step Back an intense depth to its colors.
